Obsessed with Australia
With its remoteness and its beautifully wild landscapes, Australia has long been fascinating for us. This fascination became even greater after we traveled through Western Australia early in 2018. For five weeks we drove by car along the Indian Ocean Drive and explored the west coast between Denmark and Shark Bay. We spent our nights in a small trekking tent, often in wild national parks or small campgrounds. We climbed the Gloucester Tree , visited the Abrolhos Islands , explored national parks and saw for the first time kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and ospreys in the wild. All these experiences made a lasting impression on us. Already on our flight back, it was clear to us that we definitely want to see the rest of this wonderful, huge country and have certainly not been here for the last time.
For the end of 2019, we planned another long trip through Australia. This time we wanted to explore the east coast. We had both agreed on a sabbatical with our employers and wanted to visit down-under for two months. Unfortunately, due to a job change, everything came differently. And 2020 crossed all travel plans anyway.
Let’s move to Australia
In the spring of 2022, we came up with the idea of moving to Australia. At first, we only talked abstractly about what it would be like to live there for a while. When we started to think more concretely about it, we soon realized that there were many factors that would make a move to Australia at a later point in time much more difficult. With some panic we realized: The best time is now!
So we started to make real plans.
Why Brisbane?
Soon the question came up: Where exactly do we want to live in Australia? We both really enjoy living in a big city. However, we also like to go kitesurfing and spend our free time outside the city. Therefore, we wanted to live in a city that offers good opportunities for kitesurfing in its surroundings. Ideally also a city with better weather and not necessarily bigger than Berlin. With these parameters Brisbane came into the shortlist. So we did a lot of research about Brisbane on the internet. And the more we learned about the city, the more we liked it.
In the meantime, we have been living in Brisbane for a few weeks. We like the city very much and we are curious how our future life in Brisbane will turn out to be.
